College Grads Stuck Between High Costs And Falling Wages

by Sam Taxy
October 27, 2011

It turns out the 99% is right: a college degree just isn’t the key to unlocking the American dream anymore. Two new reports show that college students and graduates are being hit by two parallel economic disasters: higher tuition costs and lower post-graduation wages. This means that students are going to have to take on significantly more debt to obtain their degrees, all the while knowing that they will have an even harder time paying it off.

The current inflation in college costs are astounding: public college costs are going up 8.3% annually, more than twice normal inflation. Private (non-profit) schools also saw a considerable jump, by more than 4%. This report therefore explains recent research that has shown that the amount of student debt accrued by college students has been exploding: it’s because the cost of college is skyrocketing too.

The obscene costs of college might even be okay if it weren’t for the fact that the premium to getting a degree has also gone down in recent years. Michael Mandel points us to a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report, which he analyzes to find that in the most recent quarter, “full-time workers with a bachelor’s degree and no advanced degree earned 3.5% less, in real terms, than a year earlier.” This has hit men especially hard, with their wages falling 5.3%, as opposed to womens’ which have gone down 1.3%.

This news is catastrophic, but unfortunately not that surprising. The 99% movement has highlighted what has become a national tragedy — lack of opportunity and crushing debt keep hardworking Americans from living the American dream. Although President Obama recently unveiled new plans to stop student debt loads from exploding further, more dramatic action is needed both to rein in student debt and to provide well paying jobs to college graduates. Until politicians can do that, all we’re going to see is increasing income inequality — and increasing social instability.

Who Are the 99 Percent? Story #18

by Cynthia S.
October 27, 2011
9:30 pm
When I was laid off, I was assured it was due to the Wall Street-created recession, not due to my performance. Now, I struggle to pay my student loans and health insurance, while the criminal bankers and traders who ruined our lives are busy laughing and collecting their bonuses.

I was valedictorian.

I have a law degree from a top-tier school.

I have a pre-existing health condition.

I have $150,000+ in student loans.

I HAD a great job that I lost due to Wall Street’s greed and the resulting financial collapse.

I will soon lose my house.

I can barely afford my medications.

There will be no hope for American unless we drastically reform Wall Street and jail those responsible.

I am the 99%.

Occupy Wall Street.

No justice, no peace. Keep fighting, 99%.

Say "No" to Debt Slavery‏!

Grayson for Congress

“This is not us.”

Last week, Alan Grayson won the MSNBC trifecta, appearing on The Rachel Maddow Show, PoliticsNation With Al Sharpton, and The Ed Show. We told you already that on the Rachel Maddow Show, Alan had the guts to point out that America now has the 5th most unequal distribution of wealth in the entire world. Alan followed through with his interview on Rev. Sharpton’s show. Here is what he said:

GRAYSON: One thing I mentioned earlier this week is that there are only four countries in the entire world that have a more unequal distribution of wealth than the United States. And how is that working for Zimbabwe, actually?

There`s so many different ways that ordinary people in this country are just not getting a fair deal. And the result of that is exactly what you see: massive unemployment; many people who can`t see a doctor when they`re sick; efforts to cheat us out of our own Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, even the unemployment insurance that you pay for in every paycheck. And it`s got to end right now.

The cattle are saying, “We are not going to be cattle any longer, stop prodding us.”

Yes, WE ARE NOT CATTLE. And we need elected officials who treat us with respect, not treat us like cattle. That’s why Alan Grayson deserves your support today.

The Occupy Wall Street protesters are peacefully protesting against this inequality. Rev. Sharpton pointed out that the Right Wing is saying that these protesters will “drag you in the streets and kill you.” This was Alan’s response:

GRAYSON: The [Right Wing is] so out-of-touch with the way ordinary people actually live. There are so many people now who don`t have a job. There are so many people who are afraid of losing their jobs. There are so many people who wonder, “How are we going to pay the mortgage this month. How are we going to pay the rent this month?” There are so many people who have already lost their homes and, frankly, they`re living in their cars. That`s the America that we have seen today, that`s been created by Wall Street.

And there`s a reason why the [protesters] are occupying Wall Street and, let`s say, not Central Park, or Grant`s Tomb. It`s because Wall Street created this system, perpetuates the system, and controls -- dominates -- the political life in this country, to the point where you`re not even allowed to be heard anymore, unless you actually go and show up.

So they`re doing the last thing that people can still do in this world: they`re showing up. That`s what they`re doing, occupying Wall Street, occupying San Francisco, occupying Detroit, occupying Orlando tomorrow. They`re showing up, and saying, “We will not take it anymore.”

Yes, WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE. We need someone in office who understands that, who understand us, and who will be our champion.

Rev. Sharpton then pointed out something shocking: that in America, average income has dropped by seven percent in the last decade. And yet the Right Wing insults and ridicules the people who are protesting against that. Alan’s response:

GRAYSON: It`s a shame that it`s necessary, but this is what people need to do in order to be heard. Because, in the end, what we`re supposed to be doing is creating a good life for ourselves, a good life for our grandchildren, a good life for everybody in America. But that`s not what people see.

What people see is that they`re falling into debt slavery -- falling into debt slavery -- where they owe more than they own on their house. They`re buried in student loans debt, credit card debt. They have no conceivable way to get out or even to survive. That`s what`s happening right now, and people are fed up.

It’s true – we are fed up. Who else has the courage and the insight to say these things?

Anne Hathaway Joins OWS
Despite the sunglasses, hat, and scarf wrapped around her neck yesterday, you may have recognized Anne Hathaway trying to blend in amongst the 99 percent. The 29-year-old actress held up signs that read "Blackboards not Bullets," "Blackboards not Banks," and "Student Debt is a National Threat!" while joining others in a "day of action" and march through New York City's Union Square on Thursday. The Dark Knight Rises star was accompanied by her protective boyfriend, actor Adam Shulman, who tried to block paparazzi from capturing the famous actress in action. Despite support from the stars, Occupy Wall Street's future remains uncertain, now that the movement has been evicted from its stomping (and sleeping) grounds in Lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park.

pregled vaznijih momenata policijske brutalnosti prema ljudima iz occupy-pokreta:
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc ... ts/248761/

& glenn greenwald je opet sve lijepo rekao

The intent and effect of such abuse is that it renders those guaranteed freedoms meaningless. If a population becomes bullied or intimidated out of exercising rights offered on paper, those rights effectively cease to exist. Every time the citizenry watches peaceful protesters getting pepper-sprayed — or hears that an Occupy protester suffered brain damage and almost died after being shot in the skull with a rubber bullet — many become increasingly fearful of participating in this citizen movement, and also become fearful in general of exercising their rights in a way that is bothersome or threatening to those in power. That’s a natural response, and it’s exactly what the climate of fear imposed by all abusive police state actions is intended to achieve: to coerce citizens to “decide” on their own to be passive and compliant — to refrain from exercising their rights — out of fear of what will happen if they don’t.

The genius of this approach is how insidious its effects are: because the rights continue to be offered on paper, the citizenry continues to believe it is free. They believe that they are free to do everything they choose to do, because they have been “persuaded” — through fear and intimidation — to passively accept the status quo. As Rosa Luxemburg so perfectly put it: “Those who do not move, do not notice their chains.” Someone who sits at home and never protests or effectively challenges power factions will not realize that their rights of speech and assembly have been effectively eroded because they never seek to exercise those rights; it’s only when we see steadfast, courageous resistance from the likes of these UC-Davis students is this erosion of rights manifest.
