Speaking English on a Serbian forum?

Um, yeah, I'm just gonna go... over... there... (runs from the mad people)

Actually, just writing in English means nothing these days, no matter which country you're from and/or what is your native language. Modern web browsers (well, all except IE8) have an auto spell-checker, so its impossible to misspell a word unless its something really complicated; and even then, all you have to do is open a new tab and enter your possibly misspelled word into Google Search, which will automatically make a suggestion in the form of "Did you think: (correct spelling)" or in most cases, display tons of online dictionary links or even Wikipedia links that explain the spelling correction for a certain word. For example, "to travel" can be spelled as both traveling and travelling, the first one is American English, and the second is British English (if your browser has the auto spell-check feature, it will underline the "wrong" spelled word depending on the setup language you chose for the browser when installing it).

So I think that a much bigger challenge is to actually speak with a friend in English. I do it all the time and it often produces some painstakingly funny moments.

I agree with DarkStar. Verbal communication is way harder than the one in written form. It takes much more time to think about the grammar, syntax etc while you're talking. My advice to you would be: Get yourself a talking partner. I have an aunt who had lived for 9 years in London, UK. Now, she's back, and the only language I use in communication with her is English :P That way, I prepare myself for future, and I'm also improving my English skills. As DarkStar had already said, there'll be a lot of funny moments (several of mine: testes, instead of tests; slimingness instead of slimness... can't remember any other right now) , but hey, it's the life that's making them :P We learn as long as we live, and there's nothing wrong with making mistakes. Au contraire, we LEARN from them :)

Spell check doesn't cover grammar or general meaning in the sentence. You can use spell check and still get it wrong. For example lots of people make no distinction between 'their' and 'there', 'then' and 'than', I've seen a girl write 'I'm board'. No spell check can fix profound ignorance.

Yes, yes, ppl are mostly reserved when it comes to english language, acting like "wtf english? gimme grand parade!". Tho is dull to speak on non-native language, it has become a matter of basic education to know at least basic skills in world's most common language.

Nice thread but, I am afraid, in Serbia you can't actively speak in English, unless your job involves it.

Hmmm, pa ne znam... Nisam sa Amerikancima imao bliskih kontakata, al s Englezima da, i apsolutno se to could nekako uvek podrazumevalo i podrazumeva, iako smo prijatelji vec 5-6 godina, na primer...
