‘Single women who are reasonably adapted to or happy with their state, are more likely than their attached pals to be psychologically androgynous (to possess both traditional masculine and feminine psychological characteristics) and hence to be capable of acting or feeling in stereotypically masculine ways (such as being self-reliant, independent, assertive, and emotionally resilient), as well as stereotypically feminine ways (such as being emotionally responsive, kind and imaginative). The androgynous women are happier, mentally healthier and more in control than the stereotypically feminine women, because of more psychological resources upon which she could draw. Her emotional and personal life is therefore likely to be somewhat richer and based on more secure personal foundation.
