Jankovic Hits for Gullikson Foundation
BOCA RATON, FL, USA - With the fifth-largest tournament in the world going on, you don't expect a top tennis player to take time out of their day for a charity hit. This is just what happened when world No.3 Jelena Jankovic came to surprise Margaret Lumia for a one hour hit at The Ritz Carlton in Key Biscayne on Thursday afternoon.
"Coming out to play with Margaret was something I was happy to do," Jankovic said. "Giving back to the sport of tennis, especially when a charity such as the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation is involved, is important to me and something I look forward to continuing to support in the future."
Dave and Margaret Lumia, loyal supporters of Swingtime – A Pro-Celebrity Pro-Am Tennis & Golf Tournament Benefiting the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation, were thrilled to continue to lend a hand for such a great cause.
"It is great to have so many friends around the world including Jelena, agent Alastair Garland and the Lumias supporting our Foundation," Tom Gullikson said.
Through the continued involvement of the tennis community, corporations and celebrities, Swingtime has now raised more than $1 million for The Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1995 after Tim was diagnosed with malignant brain tumors. Tim Gullikson, who as a coach helped establish Pete Sampras to become the top player in the world, died in 1996, at age 44, after losing his battle with the disease. The Foundation's mission is to fund care and support programs to assist brain tumor patients and their families in managing the physical, emotional and social challenges presented by the illness. Among other things, the Foundation funds information and support phone lines for brain tumor patients and their families, sends children who are brain tumor survivors to camp, and gives college scholarships to students who have been affected by brain tumors.
