Living in the Old Town
They say that during many centuries, lot of people lost their lives here. And not just lives. Rivers of tears, blood and swat went over the stone that this town is built of. Pain and suffer were so many times occupants of this small rocky troop of streets and houses. Sometimes, usually late at night, you can almost hear the sorrow which never got out of town, brought by wind, chasing some invisible enemy. When you take a long late walk, alone or not, and rest upon some wall, try to feel the shivers. An old lady told me that those are the spirits of poor fellows, who were so desperate and afraid that their souls escaped and hided into a small fractures on the house walls. Everyone told me that she is crazy. As a second guess, she did seem a little bit creepy... But, don't worry, that's not all.
Also, this town heard the most beautiful tones – children's laugh, songs and cheerful crowd during many carnivals and other celebrations. All kinds of people are coming and leaving, and all of them bring something new, something personal, and they inadvertently spare it behind. If you don't understand what I am talking about, just go to the main square, and look around you. Some of us were flashed by the beauty, sticking out from every corner, window or roof. When it's warm and sunny outside, you can't be sad, or in a bad mood. All those streets that looked so sad and dark sometimes, seem so bright and happy, that you forget, all the rains and thunders you heard the night before. You feel like dancing, and this town will dance with you.
Therefore, I think that the Old Town has two opposite sides – good and bad, black and white, colorful and gray… Whatever.
Like many other things – it's all about choice. You can rent/buy a place for living anywhere you want, but if you don't choose the right side, after a while becomes quite impossible to stay. Not that I am threatening you, but I know so many people who stayed here for a while, and than left without saying goodbye. They would probably say that it's boring, too rainy, cold... They could give you a whole bunch of reasons for not coming at all. A friend of mine, when she heard that I am moving here, told me that it's a bad idea, and that here "even the pigeons bite". But, you are here already, and the best thing to do now, is to find a way to enjoy every single moment you spend here. This town will be grateful, and will offer you its most valuable presents, if you choose to be friends with it.
But, hay! I must warn you - it won't be easy. As you presumed, there isn't clear line between it's sides. They aren't zoned, or something like that. You need to actually WANT to live here, and to like it as much as you want it to like you.
You see, Kotor is the town with a soul. It feels… It hears, sees... It knows!
It has the energy which is powerful enough to push you away… Or to pull you inside. The first time I came here, I knew that I found a place to settle down for a while. I was quite suspicious, though, just like you may be now... And I am not here to teach you how to make it, or to give you some tips. But, before I "met" this town, I heard lot of bad stuff about it. Luckily - they were all wrong. At list I think so...
It was never totally clear to me, did I choose Kotor, or did it choose me?
