Kada je pre par godina Nikolas Negroponte najavio svoj projekat izrade jeftinog, ali jednako upotrebljivog prenosnog računara za svako dete (OLPC - One Laptop Per Child) svi su se naglas smejali. Jedan od razloga je bio što je Nikolas uveravao sagovornike da će Windows biti platforma tih laptopova. Smešno zaista, jer i najsiromašnija verzija Windowsa košta bar tri puta toliko (u Americi). Ko se smejao, sada mudro ćuti.

Microsoft je u proteklih par meseci pokrenuo dve bitne kampanje koje se od njega nisu očekivale (jer je monopolista i truli kapitalista). Microsoft je pokrenuo projekat prodaje svih svojih paketa studentima za samo tri dolara. Takođe, odlučili su da podrže napore Nikolasa Negropontea i ponude OLPC sa Windows platformom (OLPC je do sada koristio linux platformu).

Ipak, cena OLPCa sa Windowsom će biti veća od 100 dolara .. Koliko tačno, ostaje da se vidi.

Mala ispravka... Paket koji će se prodavati za tri dolara uključuje: Windows XP Starter Edition, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, Microsoft Math 3.0, Learning Essentials 2.0 for Microsoft Office i Windows Live Mail desktop. The one-laptop-per-child computer (OLPC) will come with some general purpose software: web browser; word processing; basic tools for personal expression; etc. There also will be high-quality educational examples of OLPC use. A more complete list is found here.

OLPC is working with Red Hat on a Linux kernel for the machine, but we are opening up the design; it is inevitable that there will be several variants of Linux to choose from, as well as some version of Windows, and perhaps an OS X offering.

We made a decision to base the OLPC on open-source software in order to provide countries (and to whatever degree appropriate, the children themselves) with the freedom to decide for themselves what to place on the machines, and to share and localize examples of best practice generated domestically and taken from abroad.

Open-source software gives children the opportunity to “own” the machine in every sense. While we don't expect every child to become a programmer, we don't want any ceiling imposed on those children who choose to reach towards complexity. We are using open document formats for much the same reason: transparency is empowering. The children—and their teachers—will have the freedom to reshape, reinvent, and reapply their software, hardware, and content.

In some media resources, e.g. at the website of the official austrian media station ORF (http://futurezone.orf.at/produkte/stories/155581/), it was announced that OLPC is performing a strategy change and that a version of Microsoft Windows will be the offical standard software system that runs on the OLPC laptops. This is not true, as it is already described at the OLPC myths page. The OLPC is continuing to develop a Linux-based software set for the laptop in conjunction with RedHat.

Trenutna cena je oko 150 dolara i nadaju se da će kroz koju godinu, kako potražnja bude rasla, a cena komponenata opadala, dostići cenu od 100 dolara.
