CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Two years ago Ana Ivanovic and Dinara Safina shared a 'moment' when they met in the final of the French Open - a career-defining moment in particular for the victorious Ivanovic, but also a major breakthrough for Safina. "The funny thing is, we've been so long on the Tour and we never really talked with each other," Safina admitted during a press conference at this week's Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open. "I knew she'd been going through some tough moments, but I didn't know her… I felt she was much more protected, or closed."
Tennis players often talk about the difficulty of building close relationships with key rivals. In recent weeks, however, Ivanovic and Safina seem to have connected.They practiced together for the first time during Wimbledon, and have kept it up during the North American hardcourt swing, trading strokes at Stanford, San Diego and Cincinnati.
Then they decided it was time to hang out off court as well."We practiced and it was like, Okay, so let's go for dinner," said Safina
, who put in a solid display against Kim Clijsters in the second round at Cincy. "We went for dinner

From the outside the friendship makes perfect sense. After all, since that Paris spring Ivanovic and Safina have experienced tennis' highest highs and lowest lows.In 2008 Ivanovic spent 12 weeks at No.1; later Safina, who also reached the finals of the Australian and French Opens in 2009, was at the top for 26 weeks. But injuries and crises in confidence have conspired against both, so that this week the 22-year-old Serb is at No.62, the 24-year-old Russian at No.35.
"She's a really nice girl,"said Ivanovic of Safina after winning her way through to the last eight at Cincinnati, her best result since reaching the semis at Rome in May. "We sort of hung out a little more and talk a little about just stuff in general - mostly non-tennis things.
"We're like, ah, come on, let's play a final again," she laughed. "It's good to inspire each other."
