Belgrade police clashed last night with lingering bands of football supporters in the city centre after several thousand young men had attacked a gay pride parade earlier that day. The violence took place a few hundred metres from the Student Cultural Centre, the planned site for yesterday's gay pride parade. Remnants of the earlier mob, a few hundred protestors threw rocks at police, who responded with gunfire. Police responded to the attack on gay pride festival participants by firing into the air to disperse the crowd of young men and football supporters, B92 reported yesterday. The Belgrade police chief denied shots were fired during the initial attempt to cordon off protestors, but admitted "physical contact" had been necessary to restrain the crowd. A number of protestors and several policemen were injured. (FoNet)
