Pride Caravan held in Vranje with the message that there is room for all of us

A protest under the banner of the Pride Caravan, organised by the association Da se zna!, was held in Vranje on Saturday. The gathering passed peacefully, with the message that “there is room for all of us” and that LGBT+ people must have space in every city and on every square.

This was the first stop of this year's caravan; in the coming weeks it will visit Zaječar, Kraljevo, Šabac and Loznica.

The initiative aims to support the LGBT+ community in smaller towns, where homophobia and transphobia are still an everyday reality and where most people live hiding their identity.

In Vranje, participants carried the slogan of this year's Belgrade Pride, “There is room for all of us” — the same slogan as the first Pride in Belgrade in 2001, exactly 25 years ago. The point, they said, is that a society with room for LGBT+ people, people with disabilities, and members of other faiths, nationalities and minority groups can be a society of democracy, progress and freedom.

“The LGBT+ community is an integral and inseparable part of this society. Our questions and problems should concern all our fellow citizens, because only through solidarity and caring for one another can we build a society with room for all of us,” the organisers said.

The Pride Caravan is a build-up to the central Belgrade Pride event in September. The Vranje gathering showed once again that the struggle for the equality and visibility of LGBT+ people goes on beyond the big cities, with a call for greater tolerance and mutual respect across Serbia.
